A Japanese yacht can turn wind and seawater into green hydrogen while sailing, showing a remarkable glimpse of cleaner shipping.



Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) tested its demonstration yacht, Winz Maru, as part of the Wind Hunter project. While sailing in strong winds, the yacht uses wind to move through the water while an underwater turbine generates electricity. That electricity helps produce hydrogen by electrolyzing purified water made from seawater. MOL successfully demonstrated the cycle of generating power, producing and storing hydrogen, then using the stored hydrogen in fuel cells for propulsion. In 2025, hydrogen produced aboard Winz Maru while underway was also successfully supplied for use onshore in Tokyo.
